I abhore violence, so I don’t condone the actions of these anti-Minutemen protesters. However, I am so happy that there are others who recognize the real, frightening motives behind the Minuteman Project, and are willing to take a stand. However, let’s show our opposition to the Minutemen in a respectful, peaceful manner that is consistent with the ideals of democratic criticism and debate that are at the heart of our progressive political consciousness.
Going back to the topic of immigration that I’ve recently written on, I want to point out that the US really needs to be doing more to protect illegal immigrants (who do have rights) if things like this are occuring. It’s really a question of ensuring that the basic human rights of these migrants are protected- rights which are guaranteed to them irrespective of their legal status under our immigration laws (which could be more humane).
Members of a group that opposes illegal immigration protested a piece of public art with inscriptions they claim are anti-American, sparking heated exchanges with residents of this heavily Hispanic city.
Police in riot helmets separated the 40 members of Save Our State and scores of residents during the rally Saturday, but there were no reports of arrests or injuries. The protesters were then escorted away from the site.
The artwork, called ‘Danza Indigenas,’ has a 20-foot-high arch with inscriptions that read, “It was better before they came” and “This land was Mexican once, was Indian always and is, and will be again.”
